Resettlement is a durable solution to the specific needs of refugees and other vulnerable persons of concern. It is also a symbol of international solidarity and responsibility-sharing with those countries hosting large numbers of displaced populations. Resettlement processes begin with the processing of migrants’ and refugees' requirements and end with their placement in a local community in the country that has accepted them for permanent settlement.

IOM Iran works closely with the Ministry of Interior, the Bureau for Aliens and Foreign Immigrants' Affairs (BAFIA), and the Ministry of Health to provide support and assistance for the resettlement of individuals from Iran to third countries.

One of the main activities of the unit is to provide pre-departure support to refugees and vulnerable individuals, which includes medical screening, travel documentation, and orientation sessions about the country of destination.
IOM also facilitates transportation arrangements and provides temporary accommodation and support upon arrival in the host country. In addition, IOM provides post-arrival support to beneficiaries to help them integrate into their new communities.

In 2022, IOM Iran facilitated resettlement and migration processes for hundreds of beneficiaries to depart from Iran to destination countries including Australia, United Kingdom, Italy, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Iceland, France, Bolivia, Sierra Leone, and Ghana.

Objectives

Resettlement represents a chance to begin anew for vulnerable individuals who are either unable to return to their country of origin or do not have the option to stay in their country of asylum.

The main aim of the unit is to ensure that the needs of humanitarian entrants are met throughout the whole process - from travel, to health, to integration - as well as constantly improving processes of referrals and resettlement/pre-departure activities, often in collaboration with other UN Agencies in the country.

Areas of Intervention
  1. Administrative procedures and medical examinations

  2. Cultural orientation activities

  3. Post-arrival support

  4. Resettlement of Afghan girls to Rwanda, at the School of Leadership, Afghanistan (SOLA)

IOM Iran, in cooperation with IOM Rwanda, SOLA School, and various Government counterparts, assisted several Afghan girls living in Iran to relocate to SOLA’s school campus, in Rwanda.

Established as a full-time boarding school in 2016, SOLA [School of Leadership, Afghanistan] was the first and only school of its kind in Afghanistan. Its mission was, and still is, to create a safe and nurturing environment where girls can pursue secondary education, with the aim of cultivating future leaders. In August 2021, the school was forced to relocate from Kabul to Rwanda to allow its students to continue their path towards independence.

Coordinating closely with the families, the IOM Resettlement Team provided comprehensive assistance to the girls, and will continue to assist with the relocation of Afghan students to SOLA as part of its resettlement activities.
